In the summer of 2024, GO Gallery at Marnixstraat 127 closed its doors, and the space was handed over to the artist duo The London Police and their partner Suye, a fresh start for a new generation of creators.
Following this transition, the men behind GO Gallery took a year off to take some distance and reflect on their next steps.
That future is now taking shape: Oscar has been invited to join the team of the new gallery launched by the Ambassade Hotel. Located at Oude Spiegelstraat 7, one of the Nine Streets and just around the corner from the Ambassade Hotel – the Ambassade Art Gallery recently opened its doors.
The Ambassade Hotel began collecting CoBrA art in the early 2000s and has since built an impressive collection of over 800 works. These are displayed throughout the hotel, including in the rooms, lounges, and hallways. The new gallery now offers a public platform where CoBrA art and contemporary art come together.
First exhibition: “Gesture as Language” – Shoe & Wolvecamp, August 23 from 1:00 – 6:00 PM.
The gallery opens with a special exhibition featuring works by Theo Wolvecamp, co-founder of the CoBrA movement, alongside those of Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman, pioneer of Calligraffiti. Two generations, one visual language – a dialogue of expression and movement. More information to follow soon!
What is CoBrA?
CoBrA (an acronym for Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam) was an influential avant-garde movement that emerged after World War II. Between 1948 and 1951, artists from across Europe joined this experimental collective. They drew inspiration from children’s drawings, folk art, and everything outside academic traditions. Their guiding principle: art for everyone, by everyone.
To this day, CoBrA remains highly significant in both the Dutch and international art worlds.
